In the vast and diverse landscape of Indian literature, the story of the Bene Israel Jews emerges as both an experience of deep exile and of rootedness. One of the smallest communities in India, the Bene Israel experience reflects a long history of settlement marked not by persecution—as in many other parts of the world—but by a remarkable absence of anti-Semitism.
