About this book

The Greatest Assamese Stories Ever Told, curated by Mitra Phukan, is a captivating anthology that spans over a century of remarkable short fiction by some of the finest Assamese writers. From literary masters like Lakhminath Bezbaroa, Mamoni Raisom Goswami, Saurav Kumar Chaliha, Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya, and Homen Borgohain to contemporary voices such as Harekrishna Deka, Debabrata Das, and Kuladhar Saikia, these storytellers transport readers into a world of diverse narratives.

Within this collection, readers will discover literary gems like Bezbaroa's 'Patmugi,' a searing portrayal of societal injustices, particularly towards women; Goswami's 'Values,' an unforgettable depiction of a destitute woman finding solace in her Brahmin lineage; Deka's 'The Captive,' a poignant exploration of the complex relationship between a kidnapper and his victim; Borgohain's renowned story 'Looking for Ismael Sheikh,' which delves into the aftermath of religious violence on a community; and Sheelabhadra's 'Sweet Acacia,' a romance as enchanting as the fragrant flower it revolves around.

Meticulously selected and edited, these stories provide a fascinating glimpse into the culture and people of Assam, resonating with readers far and wide. The Greatest Assamese Stories Ever Told is a testament to the richness of Assamese literature and the enduring power of storytelling.

Interesting and Unique
The stories are from Assam, the part of India which people often dont even know or talk much about. But this book is must have. I purchased this book as the author was visiting to my City and I had chance to get the copy signed by author herself. And Luckily I was successful in getting it autographed by the author herself.
