There are over two hundred books in this catalog. Behind each one is a writer from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, or Tripura — someone who sat down and put the Northeast into words. And for years, finding those books, talking about them, and connecting with the people who wrote them meant piecing things together from scattered corners of the internet.
NortheastReads was built to fix that. One place, one community, every book — and every feature on this portal exists because readers and authors from the Northeast deserve a home that was made specifically for them. Here is everything you can do here.
For Readers
Discover Books Worth Reading Start with the catalog. Over 200 books, all from the Eight Sister States, organized so you can actually find what you are looking for. Filter by state, by category — Fiction, Poetry, History, Folklore, Culture, Biography, and more — or browse award-winning titles, featured picks, and what the community is reading this month. Every book page has a full description, publication details, where to buy it, community ratings, and reviews from fellow readers.
Track Everything You Read The reading tracker is the heart of your account. Mark any book as Want to Read, Reading Now, Finished, or Paused. Your personal shelves update automatically. When you finish a book, leave a one-line private thought — a note that lives quietly in your reading log. It is a small thing that adds up to a rich record of your reading life over time.
Set a Reading Goal At the start of every year, set a reading goal. The goal page tracks your progress month by month — how many books you have finished, how many remain, and whether you are ahead or behind pace. It is honest, and it is motivating.
Build Your Own Bookshelves Every account comes with three default shelves — My Reading List, Want to Read, and Finished — but you can create as many custom shelves as you like. Keep them private or make them public so other readers can browse your taste in books.
Keep a Reading Journal Your reading journal is private, tied to individual books, and entirely your own. Write entries as you go — a thought at page 80, a reaction at the end, something you want to remember. No one else sees it. It is yours.
See Your Reading Stats Your stats page gives you a real picture of your reading life: books read by year, your most-read categories, reading streaks, total pages, and your most active months. It updates in real time as you track.
Write Reviews That Help Other Readers Write a review for any book in the catalog. Rate on a half-star scale, add a title, say what you really think. Reviews are public — your words help other readers decide what to pick up next. And writing a review earns you 20 points.
Submit Quotes to the Community Wall Found a line that stayed with you? Submit it to the Quote Wall. Quotes are tied to the book they come from, and other readers can save the ones they love. Saved quotes appear on your profile. Every submission earns you 5 points.
Join or Host a Reading Circle Reading Circles are small, focused groups — up to twelve people, one book, four guided weeks. Each week has discussion prompts. Members post, reply, and respond to each other. If you have been looking for a book club, this is it. Replying in a circle earns you 5 points; starting one earns you 10 points.
Participate in the Community The community spaces are where conversations happen — general discussions, book recommendations, author conversations, and more. Like posts, bookmark threads, reply to other readers. Every post you make earns you 10 points.
Ask Authors Your Questions On any author page or book page, you can send a question directly to a verified author. Questions are public, and when the author answers, you get a notification. This is a live, ongoing space for real conversations between readers and the writers they love.
Build Your Reading Network Follow other readers to see their reviews, quotes, reading circles, and finished books in your Activity feed. Follow verified authors to get their Q&A answers and book notes. Your For You tab surfaces reader recommendations and authors worth knowing. Your network is yours to build.
Earn Points and Climb the Leaderboard Every meaningful action on NortheastReads earns points. Joining earns you 50. A review earns 20. Finishing a book earns 5. Referring a friend who joins earns 100. Points accumulate on a public leaderboard — a live ranking of the most active readers on the portal.
Enter Book Giveaways Spend your points to enter book giveaways. More entries means more chances to win. Past giveaways and their winners are publicly listed. Your points are worth something tangible here.
Refer a Friend Every reader has a unique referral link on their profile. Share it. When a friend signs up through your link, you earn 100 points and get a notification and email. A referral counter on your profile shows how many people have joined through you.
For Authors
Claim Your Author Page Every author in the catalog has a public author page. If that is you, you can request to link it to your reader account. Once the admin approves, your author presence is connected to your account — you keep everything a reader has, and gain a set of author tools on top.
Manage Everything From Your Dashboard Your author dashboard shows your Q&A activity, follower count, book notes, and a full management view of your presence on the portal. Everything in one place.
Keep Your Profile Current Add or update your bio, profile photo, state, website, and social links directly from your author page. Your author page is the face of your presence on NortheastReads — it should reflect who you are today.
Answer Questions From Your Readers Readers send you questions from your author page and from your book pages. You see all of them in your dashboard. Answer the ones you want to answer, feature the best ones, and reject the rest. Answered questions appear publicly on your author page and on the relevant book page. When you answer, the reader who asked gets notified. You can edit or delete your answers at any time.
Publish Book Notes Write directly on your own book pages. Share what inspired the book, add context for readers, or recommend what to read next. Notes appear in a dedicated section on the book page and in the activity feed of everyone who follows you. It is your space to say something more than the back cover allows.
Submit Books to the Catalog Submitting a book for catalog inclusion is straightforward from your author page. Submissions go to the admin for review. If you have written a book from the Northeast that belongs here, this is how it gets added.
Grow Your Readership Readers follow your author page to receive your Q&A answers and book notes in their feed. Your follower count is shown publicly on your author page. When someone new follows you, you get a notification.
Stay Updated by Email When a reader asks you a new question, you receive an email with the question text and a direct link to answer it from your dashboard. You never have to check back manually to know when someone is waiting.
Built for the Northeast
There are features here — the NE States Explorer, the Monthly Pick, the Literary Map — that exist for one reason: the literature of Northeast India has a geography, a specificity, and a richness that general platforms ignore. Every state has a dedicated page showing its books and authors and cultural context. Every month, a book from the region gets a spotlight. The community that is growing here is not a general reading community that happened to include a few Northeast books. It was built from the ground up for these eight states, for these readers, and for these writers.
If you have not made an account yet, this is a good time to start. If you already have one, there is probably something on this list you have not tried yet.
The books are here. So are the people who love them.
