 Description:

In the novel “What Will People Say?” by Mitra Phukan, Mihika, a 56-year-old widow, finds herself entering a relationship with Zuhayr, a 60-year-old divorcee and her late husband’s friend. In the modern era, one would think this wouldn’t raise more than a few eyebrows, especially considering their grown children are happy for them to find happiness again. However, in the small town of Tinigaon, Assam, it is considered inappropriate for a woman of Mihika’s age to engage in a romantic relationship, especially with a Muslim man. The scandalized Old Guard of Tinigaon is quick to judge as Mihika and Zuhayr are seen together in public, causing them to “flaunt” their affair. Adding fuel to the fire is a nosy neighbor, Ranjana, who keeps the moral brigade busy with gossip about Zuhayr’s late-night visits to Mihika’s house.

Despite the gossip and slander, Mihika chooses to ignore it all and remain true to her relationship with Zuhayr, who has filled a void in her life since her husband’s passing five years ago. As long as her four closest friends—Tara, Triveni, Shagufta, and Pallavi—stand by her side, she cares little about the opinions of others. However, when the gossip takes a sinister turn that could jeopardize her daughter Veda’s happiness, Mihika is faced with a difficult decision. Should she give up the man she loves for her daughter’s sake, or is there an alternative that can fulfill both their desires?

With great sensitivity and gentle humor, Mitra Phukan, a remarkable chronicler of the human heart rooted in the culture and sensibilities of Assam, tells this story. “What Will People Say?” resonates with readers from all walks of life, reminding us to consider the weight of societal expectations and the choices we make for our own happiness, no matter where we may be or who we are.
